Howey-Gauge Indiana Poll conducted 8/29-8/30 of 600 LVs:
McCain 45%
Obama 43%
The timing of this poll is, well, rather odd, as it was conducted literally hours after Obama's DNC speech and Sarah Palin was officially announced as McCain's VP pick. And while I have my doubts as to whether the state is really this close, (Rasmussen and SUSA each have McCain +6; that seems about right) it's still clear that Obama will be much more competitive here than Democrats typically are. The two have comparable favorable ratings: McCain is at 55%/27%, while Obama is at 56%/27%. I still think it'll be very difficult for Obama to carry Indiana, particulary since he didn't pick Sen. Evan Bayh (D-IN) as his running mate, but if McCain has to spend any time or money here, it's a significant victory for the Obama campaign.
SIGNIFICANT ADVANTAGE FOR McCAIN.
