New Jersey Primary Results

You can view in-depth New Jersey Primary Results here.

NJ-SEN:
Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D) held off a vigorous primary challenge from longtime Rep. Rob Andrews by a convincing 59%-35%. Andrews won Camden and Gloucester Counties, which he represents in Congress, by 80%-17%, but Lautenberg won most of the densely-populated counties in North Jersey by similarly overwhelming margins. On the Republican side, former Rep. Dick Zimmer won a tighter-than-expected race against conservative State Sen. Joe Pennachio by 46%-40%. Lautenberg's strong showing and New Jersey's long streak of voting for Democratic Senators means this race starts at STRONG ADVANTAGE FOR LAUTENBERG.

NJ-01:
This is the House seat Andrews gave up to run for the Senate, and it is considered a safely Democratic seat. Andrews' wife, Camille, easily won the Democratic Primary with 83% of the vote. It is widely speculated that at some time she will step aside and allow her husband to run for re-election, but either Andrews would easily defeat the Republican nominee, minister Dale Glading. OVERWHELMING ADVANTAGE FOR ANDREWS.

NJ-03:
Going into Election Night, most observers expected Ocean County Freeholder Jack Kelly and Medford Township Councilman Chris Myers to have a very close race here for the Republican nomination. But in the end, the only close race was for second, with Myers running away with 49% of the vote to Kelly's 26% and former Tabernacle Township Councilman Justin Murphy's 25%. Kelly won Ocean County with only 44%, while Myers won 74% in his base of Burlington County. While the Republicans probably nominated their strongest candidate, the divisive primary left Myers with a lot of unhappy Ocean County Republicans and a huge financial deficit to State Sen. John Adler (D). SLIGHT ADVANTAGE FOR ADLER.

NJ-05: Rabbi Dennis Shulman easily won the Democratic Primary here by 61%-32%, winning the right to face Republican incumbent Scott Garrett. The 5th is usually Republican territory, but Garrett is very conservative, even for this district, and he won a modest 55% in 2006 against a weak Democratic opponent. STRONG ADVANTAGE FOR GARRETT.

NJ-07:
This seat is open due to the retirement of Republican Rep. Mike Ferguson, who won by only 49%-48% in 2006 over Democratic assemblywoman Linda Stender. The winner
of the seven-candidate Republican Primary was State Senate Minority Leader Leonard Lance, who won 40%-20% over his nearest opponent, former Congressional Aide Kate Whitman. This has all the makings of a very close race in November, but this district's Republican lean makes Lance a slight favorite over Stender, who is again running for this seat. SLIGHT ADVANTAGE FOR LANCE.
