IA-SEN: Republicans failed to recruit a strong challenger to Sen. Tom Harkin (D), and the three lower-tier Republicans in the race fought to a near-tie. But ultimately, businessman and Navy Vet Christopher Reed won with 35.2% to former State Rep. George Eichorn's 34.6%, with businessman Steve Rathje running 3rd with 30%; Reed's final margin was only 448 votes. Harkin is not overwhelmingly popular, but against a little known challenger like Reed he should win easily. STRONG ADVANTAGE FOR HARKIN.
IA-01: Both Democratic Rep. Bruce Braley and his challenger, Republican State Sen. David Hartusch, ran unopposed in yesterday's primary. Braley won this seat by a comfortable 55%-43% in 2006, but the district is competitive and Hartusch is a quality challenger. STRONG ADVANTAGE FOR BRALEY.
IA-03: Democratic Rep. Leonard Boswell has held this highly competitive Des Moines-area seat for six terms, due in no small part to his moderate voting record. But that got him in some trouble this year, as State Rep. Ed Fallon contended that the district needed a more liberal representative. But Boswell held off Fallon by a solid 61%-39%, and he is now a big favorite over former congressional aide Kim Schmett (R). STRONG ADVANTAGE FOR BOSWELL.
