Alabama Primary Results

With two open House seats and a Senate race in Alabama this year, Primary Night gave us some insight of where these races could go in November:

AL-SEN: As expected, State Sen. Vivian Figures easily won the Democratic nomination for US Senate with 64% of the vote in a 3-way field. She will take on Republican incumbent Jeff Sessions, a popular Senator who won the GOP Primary yesterday 92%-8%. OVERWHELMING ADVANTAGE FOR SESSIONS.

AL-02:
One of the biggest "gets" for Democrats this year in House recruitments was Montgomery Mayor Bobby Bright, who was offered to run for this seat by both parties (mayor of Montgomery is a nonpartisan office). The moderate Bright is considered the only Democrat who could have been competitive in this heavily Republican district, and he didn't disappoint last night with 70% of the primary vote over two other Democrats. On the Republican side, we will have a runoff between State Rep. Jay Love of Montgomery, who won 35%, and State Sen. Harri Anne Smith of Slocomb, who won 22%. The runoff is July 15th. STRONG ADVANTAGE FOR THE REPUBLICANS.

AL-05:
In the Democratic Primary in the race to replace retiring Rep. Bud Cramer (D), State Sen. Parker Griffith cruised to a 90%-10% victory. On the Republican side, advertising executive Wayne Parker just missed avoiding a runoff, winning 49% with attorney Cheryl Guthrie placing a distant second with 18% of the vote. Parker should win the July 15th runoff easily, but the drain on his resources from that could prove costly in November. SLIGHT ADVANTAGE FOR GRIFFITH.
